About Us
How We Got Started
Across the United States, communities are losing access to full-service grocery stores and fresh, affordable food. When a grocery store closes, the impact goes far beyond convenience. Families may be left traveling farther for groceries, relying on smaller stores with limited options, or paying more for the food they need every day.
Food Deserts was created to give people living in these communities a place to be heard.
We want to hear directly from residents about what is happening in their neighborhoods, how the loss of grocery stores has affected them, and what they believe their community needs. By bringing those voices together, we can help shine a light on areas that deserve greater attention and investment.
Our Mission
Our mission is to help communities across America speak up about the need for better access to fresh, affordable food.
We believe the people who live in a neighborhood understand its needs better than anyone. By collecting community feedback, sharing local stories, and identifying areas where grocery access is limited, we can help demonstrate that these communities are not forgotten — and that there is real demand for change.
Our long-term goal is to connect communities with grocery retailers, developers, local organizations, and other partners who are willing to explore opportunities to bring full-service grocery stores back to underserved areas.
Every community deserves access to fresh food. Every community deserves to be heard.
Your Story Can Make a Difference
A grocery store closing may look like a business decision on paper, but for the people who live nearby, the effects are personal.
Your story helps others understand what limited grocery access really means for families, seniors, workers, and neighborhoods.
Tell us what is happening in your community. Together, those individual voices can become a much louder call for change.

Our Programs
Tell us about grocery access in your neighborhood. Let us know which stores have closed, how far residents now travel for groceries, and what challenges your community is experiencing.
Your feedback helps us identify communities where better grocery access is needed most.

Bring Attention to the Need
Food deserts can easily be overlooked when the people affected by them do not have a platform.
We bring community experiences together to help raise awareness about underserved neighborhoods and demonstrate the need for fresh, affordable, and accessible food options.

Build Grocery Partnerships
Our goal is not simply to identify the problem. We want to help create solutions.
As community support grows, we hope to work with grocery retailers, developers, community organizations, and local leaders interested in bringing new grocery options to neighborhoods that need them.
